Social Analysis – Mission SDCC, Day 3

July 26, 2014
Trident and I had an interesting day at the Great Gathering of Geeks and Nerds. We stepped off the shuttle bus and entered into an area that was an extension of the main gathering at the center of convention. There were many interesting event of which to take note. There was a huge military tank like vehicle. Hundreds of people stood in line to climb up on this vehicle and shoot at 2 dimensional cardboard characters – someone referred to the character as “Shredder”…? Once the person climbed on to the vehicle, they were able to rotate the top of the vehicle to take better aim. We watched for a bit to see what they were using as ammunition – it turned out they were shooting giant pizzas at the characters, trying to knock them over…Giant Pizzas.

Another event was a place where you could stand in line to get a ticket to be able to return in the evening and participate in other larger events in the area. It was amazing. All of this peaceful standing in line to be allowed to stand in another line later…

So we decided to experience more of this waiting in line. A giant vendor of the 21st Century,, had a tent set up with a large structure containing a touch screen and a set of doors. We were given cards with codes to be entered into the touchscreen. When we reached the locker, Trident entered her number into the screen, a door popped open and she received a DVD of Dr. WHO. I entered my code, a door popped open and I received a pair of shaded eye protectors. So cool!

We also had an encounter with “The Headless Horseman”…He didn’t say much.

We left this area and headed over to NerdHQ where we watched some small panels with 21st Century Celebrities. We also entered our names in a data bank and were given an identity bracelet. We will explore the purpose of the bracelet more on today’s mission.

The rest of the day was spent exploring the area around the center of convention and examining exhibits in the huge exhibition hall. We met up with many natives we had encountered previously for a dinner stop and a quick trip to a tiny establishment to buy and experience Gelato…a delicious substance that was quite refreshing.

Today Trident will be actually speaking on a panel with other nerd and geek women. I am so proud of her for undertaking this part of the assignment. I will be documenting every moment!! I will continue this report tomorrow.

Battle on!
Pike out.
